Horses Can Heal, Hippotherapy Helps!

Hippotherapy is a physical, occupational, and speech therapy that utilizes the natural gait and movement of a horse to provide motor and sensory output.

Hippotherapy, also known as equine therapy, allows therapists to use horses to help their patients of all ages make progress with their disabilities. There are currently more than 800 therapeutic riding centers in the United States.

Because horses have similar behaviors and personality styles to people in terms of responsiveness to triggers and treatments, the connection between humans and horses can be tremendously beneficial.

These centers are accredited by the American Hippotherapy Association, a strong supporter of the leaps and bounds we’ve made over the years to help those with a wide range of disabilities, from mild autism to extreme physical malformation.

The benefits of Hippotherapy cannot be overstated. A trained therapist and horse handler will work with the patient to build trust and skill with the horse over time, and progress is individualized to the patient.

Children and adults who participate in Hippotherapy can reasonably expect a range of benefits, depending on the patient, the disorder, and the specific therapy applied.
